The Difference Between SEO and SEM

Tuesday Jan 23, 2018

Many of the business owners we talk with aren’t quite clear on this distinction. Before creating an online marketing strategy, it is important to iron out those differences.

SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. Anything you do to grow your business by increasing your website’s visibility on search engines (like Google) falls under SEM.

We encourage every business with a converting website to have some sort of Search Engine Marketing plan. This can include paid ads (Pay Per Click, PPC), content creation, and SEO. However, SEM is primarily associated with PPC ads.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, falls right under this SEM umbrella. When you hire a professional to perform SEO for you, they use a strategy of link building and/or other things to leverage your website and increase its’ rankings. The goal is always page 1 of Google.

At WhitePoint Digital, we offer a free consultation for you to discover what SEM strategies you should pursue, or if SEM strategies are a good path for you at all. We look forward to talking with you!
